Offshore Wind Power in New York

New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has issued a statement announcing the release of a comprehensive New York State Offshore Wind Master Plan that is designed to guide the development of 2.4 gigawatts of offshore wind power by 2030, enough to power up to 1.2 million homes with clean energy.

In his statement, the governor said that “[w]hile the federal government continues to turn its back on protecting natural resources and plots to open up our coastline to drilling, New York is doubling down on our commitment to renewable energy and the industries of tomorrow.”

According to the statement, offshore wind is a critical component of the governor’s mandate to meet 50% of the state’s electricity needs with renewably sourced generating technologies by 2030. In fact, in his 2018 State of the State address, Governor Cuomo had affirmed that the state will issue solicitations in 2018 and in 2019 for a combined total of at least 800 megawatts of offshore wind power.
